The Greater Cape May Historical Society at the Colonial House Showcases Exhibit, The Pennywise Archive

When: June 15 – September 25
Where: The Greater Cape May Historical Society at the Colonial House

Open June 15 through September 15, The Greater Cape May Historical Society at the Colonial House is celebrating its’ 49th season. Admission to the Colonial House is free, but donations towards house maintenance are greatly appreciated. The Society headquarters is the Colonial House Museum c 1730, located at 653½ Washington Street, Cape May, next to Cape May City Hall behind the large Victorian house.
One of the historical archive topics showcased by the historical society, the Pennywise publication, has grown in popularity. The publication was created and published by Joe Barker, publication editor, and Louis Piron, business manager. Despite the Pennywise’ small staff, the creativity of the publication provided a detailed journal covering the summer season’s happenings, town events, along with local gossip and hand drawn advertisements. Just about everyone in town searched for the new edition on Saturday evening to view if their photograph is on the front cover and their name in the picture key.
Pennywise began in 1931 and ran through the war years, the cold war, the moon landing on to final years in the 80’s when the publication ceased. While the pictures, and original artwork depicting the business community are unique, the journal entry for that week was written in long hand. Head over to the Colonial House to view the exhibit!
Stop by on Saturdays when the Society Historian, Harry Bellangy, is “in the house.” After September 15, you can arrange a private tour by notifying us in email at 1730colonialhouse@gmail.com.
