Drink of the Week: Apple Cider Hot Toddy

Though we missed the January 11th celebration of National Hot Toddy Day, now seems like the perfect time to pay tribute to the toddy. This cold-weather classic can reportedly fend off winter colds, energize its drinkers, and even de-stress. Light enough that it won’t bog you down and sweet enough to be savored as a post-dinner treat, we proudly present the Apple Cider Hot Toddy.

Ingredients:
1 green tea or black tea bag
1½ ounces rye whiskey or bourbon
1 ounce real apple cider
½ small lemon
Optional garnishes: Thin, round slices of lemon & a cinnamon stick
These ingredients should be quick and easy finds at your local grocery store. For your choice of rye whiskey or bourbon, consult the professionals at Joe Canal’s of Rio Grande or Gleeson’s of Ocean View for their opinions on the best-tasting options.

Instructions:
1. Heat water to the boiling point and pour over the tea bag in a mug. Leave about an inch of room in your mug for the whiskey and cider. Let the tea steep for a few minutes, then discard the bag so the tea doesn’t get bitter.
2. Pour in the whiskey or bourbon and a hefty splash of apple cider (adjust these amounts to suit your tastes). Squeeze in the juice of half a lemon and garnish with lemon slices and a cinnamon stick. Sip up.
