STONE HARBOR – This week’s lifeguard is a seasoned member of the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol, Ian Schiavone. Ian grew up outside of Philly but moved down to the shore after graduating high school. He is currently a rising senior at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas, where he majors in Public Policy and Economics.
This will be Ian’s fifth year as a Stone Harbor lifeguard, starting when he was only 17. Even after five years, Ian continues to enjoy working as a lifeguard.
“I love it. It’s where I want to spend my time,” he said.
Ian notes that working as a lifeguard has granted him several opportunities and lets him connect with new people every day. Along with this, Ian loves that his job allows him to help the community.
Ian has found many new leadership opportunities on the Stone Harbor Beach Patrol. One of his favorites has been being able to help train the rookies. Ian enjoys having the chance to be in a leadership position that isn’t too stressful.
When he’s not on duty, Ian enjoys surfing, fishing, and just spending time outside.
“I would spend my time at the beach even if I wasn’t working,” he said.
One of his favorite moments of his job took place three years ago. Ian was out in a rowboat when he spotted a whale.
“I couldn’t believe I was getting paid to see a whale,” Ian said.
Ian is looking forward to a great summer season. Although he said that every year gets busier, he is eager to serve his local community from the 108th street lifeguard stand. He also is planning on having fun while doing it.
Ian is especially looking forward to this year’s lifeguard races. Although he has yet to win one, he is optimistic and can’t wait to participate.
Ian plans on continuing working as a lifeguard for at least another season before enrolling in graduate school.
