Fireside Chats, ‘Not Your Father’s History Lectures,’ begin Jan. 18 at Cold Spring Brewery

From 4 to 5 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 18 at Cold Spring Brewery, we’ll be serving up some tasty brews and historical knowledge with the free lecture series “Fireside Chats.” Gather round the fireplace at Cold Spring Brewery for this free lecture series with Historic Cold Spring Village’s own Deputy Director Jim Stephens.

We’re going to kick off the series with “The First Frontier: Whaling, Whaler-Yeoman and the European Settlement of Cape May County.” A favorite of many, this lecture is based on Jim’s summer and winter distance learning whaling presentation.

Next up in the series on Jan. 25 is “Did That Actually Happen? Myths & Strange Truths from New Jersey & American History.” Did Betsy Ross create the design of the flag of the United States? Was Cape May County invaded by British forces? All these questions answered and more. Stop on by and learn something new!

Feb. 1 will be “A Blast Heard in Philadelphia: John Barry & the Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet,” a discussion of the June 29, 1776 Battle of Turtle Gut Inlet, the only engagement of note to take place in Cape May County during the Revolution. Come on in, get warm, grab a good brew, and find out why that bridge was named after Commodore John Barry.

Feb. 8 is “New Jersey and Booze: Perfect Together,” a look at the alcohol industry and alcohol use in New Jersey from the colonial era through the end of Prohibition. What better place to have a lecture on booze than in the cozy and inviting Cold Spring Brewery tasting room?
