Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, in conjunction with The Garden Patch Quilters, presents the biennial “A Garden of Quilts” Quilt Show this weekend on Mar. 14 and 15. Over 150 traditional and contemporary quilts are judged and put on display in the WheatonArts Event Center, along with a vendors mall, boutique table, raffle quilt, and hourly demonstrations. This judged Quilt Show recognizes quality work and provides quilters with an evaluation of their work. Visitors will be able to see a wide variety of quilt displays, specialty fabric and supplies merchants, quilting and embellishing demonstrations, and other unique quilt-related exhibits.
Quilting is a historically significant activity occurring around the world for many centuries. Not only are they functional artworks that provide warmth, but they are also woven into the heritage and traditions of many cultures. This event showcases the creativity and high-quality workmanship of quilters from throughout the Mid-Atlantic region, including a Junior Division. Quilts, quilted items, and garments will be judged in the following categories: visual impact, color, design, quilting, quality, and finishing of the piece.
Entries are judged by Phyllis Manley, an avid quilter of 45 years. Phyllis has been certified for 10 years as a National Association of Certified Quilt Judges, and in 2008 became qualified to judge Masterpiece Quilts. Karen Dever, AQA Certified Appraiser, will offer appraisals in the Event Center each day of the event. Fees are $30 for oral and $50 for written appraisals.
Admission is $6 per person. WheatonArts members and children five and under are free. Show hours are Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Food and refreshments are available for purchase in the Event Center. Parking is free.
