Where to begin looking for a perfect summer wine among racks and racks of choices? We consulted our knowledgeable friends at Joe Canal’s of Rio Grande. The latest “vino” buzz surrounds Joe Canal’s new line of Tinazzi Italian wines produced in Lasize, Italy. What began with the commitment and passion of Eugenio Tinazzi has since expanded to a global appreciation for this family’s high quality wines. Here’s what we learned about some of the affordable highlights of this quality collection:
Tinazzi Opera No. 3
N° 3 OPERA 2005 is the result of a careful selection of grapes personally made by Gian Andrea Tinazzi from three Italian Regions, very important for winegrowing: Veneto, Puglia, Sicilia. This red blend is said to be “perfect with meats, roast and grilled, pot roast and important ripe cheese.” Serving temperature 64-68°F in large glass; uncork a few hours before drinking.
Amarone della Valpolicella
A blend of 80% Corvina 80%, 15% Rondinella, and 5% Molinara grapes, the Amarone is of an intense ruby red color. Its aroma is comparable to that of ripe fruit, plum, and vanilla while its flavor is best described as “well balanced” with “toasted touches”. The Amarone pairs perfectly with roasted and grilled meats as well as cheeses such as the DiBruno Bros. imported aged provolone and cheddar also available for sale at Joe Canal’s. Serving temperature 64-68°F in large glass; uncork a few hours before drinking.
Valpolicella Ripasso
The Valpolicella Ripasso is also of a rich red color with a fragrance of prune and sour cherry with a light scent of leather. The flavor is crisp and clean with a pleasant wood finish. This particular Tinazzi is suitable to accompany a Risotto, bean and pasta soup, and various dishes of roasted or stewed meat. Serve at room temperature.
Montepulciano d’Abruzzo
We’ve saved the best for the last. This red consists purely of 100% Montepulciano grapes and is a favorite of Joe Canal’s resident wine consultant, Dawn. She explained that of all Tinazzi authentic Italian wines, this is “geared most toward the American palate”. Currently Joe Canal’s best-selling summer wine, consider the Montepulciano a must-try. It features a delicate well-structured flavor and a fragrance of fresh fruits. Joe Canal’s associates have dubbed it “the pizza wine” due to how nicely it pairs with a hot slice and with a varied cheese platter. It is also the ideal red for a backyard barbecue and complements grilled meats. Serve chilled.
