Second Annual Flounder Tournament to Benefit The ALS Association Returns September 6 & 7

ALS

The Second Annual Two Day Flounder Tournament to benefit The ALS Association returns to Sea Isle City on Friday, Sept. 6 through Saturday, Sept. 7. The ALS Flounder Tournament was started last year to help raise awareness and money for the disease ALS, commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig’s disease.

Sean Meyer’s family has been affected directly since 2017 when his mother-in-law was diagnosed, whose sister also had ALS and succumbed to the disease this past November. The family loves fishing, so they thought a tournament was the perfect way to bring people together to raise money and awareness for a charity that is close to their hearts.

The funds raised from last year’s tournament were donated in full to The ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter. The association invests in research studies, along with helping local community members that have ALS. Home healthcare, nurse care, and in-home doctor care are much needed for people suffering the debilitating symptoms of ALS. Most functions and daily routines are halted because of the loss of muscles and speech, so everything from showering, brushing your teeth, eating, writing, walking, and speaking are taken away from people with ALS.

Fishing is open at sunrise on Friday, Sept. 6 and weigh-in must be done by 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 7 at Sea Isle Bait and Tackle, located at 4120 Park Rd. in Sea Isle City. You are allowed one weigh-in fish per angler. Fishing is open anywhere you want and there are no mile limits or closing areas. All fishermen on your boat must enter to ensure the integrity of the contest. Junior anglers must hook and fight their own fish. The heaviest flounder over the two days of fishing will win. Prizes will be awarded for first, second and third place – tie goes to the longest fish.

After the competition, attend the award dinner, with an auction, raffles, and awards, on Saturday, Sept. 7 from 6-10 p.m. at Townsend Inlet Yacht Club. Townsend Inlet Yacht Club is located at 87th Street and the Bay in Sea Isle City.

The fee to enter is $30 per adult, $20 for junior anglers (14 and younger). The fee includes entry to the awards dinner at the Townsend Inlet Yacht Club in Sea Isle City.

Registration will take place Thursday, September 5 from 5-8 p.m. at Slack Tide Brewery, located at 1072 Rt. 83 in Cape May Court House. You can also register online by credit card on the ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter at webpa.alsa.org. For more information, contact Sean Meyers at 609-602-8957 or meyers.sean@gmail.com.
