Island Hopping: July 1 to July 7

Cape May County is a treasure trove of thrills, games, specialty seafood, happy hour specials, traditional family-style restaurants, beach gear, breakfast favorites and relaxing rituals. Yet with its 620-square-mile span, this Jersey Shore county can be quite daunting. With all this ground to cover, where should you even begin? We’re here with our third edition of Island Hopping, offering our map of suggestions of where to “do the shore” for a great week of Cape May County fun.

Start your day at the shore with breakfast at Cappelletti’s Italian Deli in Cape May! Breakfast sandwiches are available in three sizes, bagel, Kaiser or long roll, and among them is Cappy’s favorite with eggs, sweet sausage, long hots and provolone. Good morning!

Once everyone’s full and ready to go, drive over the bridge into Wildwood Crest to scenic Lakeview Docks on Sunset Lake. Soak up the sun’s strong morning rays aboard a Lakeview kayak. Peace and quiet has never felt as good as it does aboard a kayak on this Jersey Shore waterway. Only $20 per hour for a single and $30 per hour for a double, Lakeview kayaks can be great for exercise and even better for relaxation. New to kayaking? The Lakeview staff provides professional pointers on rowing, helping you get started.

Worked up an appetite on the water? Head back to Cape May to Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille, where you can “Keep calm and Harry on.” Take a seat at the rooftop bar and enjoy the beautiful views of the beach, all while sipping on a cool cocktail such as the popular and fresh orange crush. For lunch, choose from delicious eats such as sesame ginger chicken salad, lobster BLT, grilled salmon and more!

If you’re in the mood for something different for your midday meal, try Asian cuisine in the contemporary and warm atmosphere of Asian Legends in Cape May. The extensive menu features Japanese, Thai and Chinese cuisines. Try the handmade rolls or fresh cut sashimi at the brand new, chef-attended sushi bar!

Regardless of the cuisine you choose for lunch, make sure your next stop is Morey’s Piers & Beachfront Water Parks on the Wildwoods Boardwalk! Complete with two water parks, three piers with rides, boardwalk eats, shopping and more, Morey’s Piers makes for a great afternoon full of fun in the sun. If you haven’t changed out of your swimsuit yet, head to one of the two water parks and make a splash! Or, if you’re done hitting the water for the day, hop on some classic rides such as the Teacups, the Musik Express and the Giant Wheel.

In the mood for a sweet treat after an afternoon of thrills? Douglass Fudge & Candies at Wildwood Avenue and the Boardwalk can provide you with the creamiest fudge you will ever taste, incomparable salt water taffy and homemade chocolate. The Douglass family’s commitment to quality is evident after just one sample of these sweet treats, but believe us, you’ll want a lot more than that. Don’t leave the Boardwalk without a box of this Jersey Shore tradition! Check out Douglass Fudge & Candies’ new location in Stone Harbor.

Before leaving the Wildwoods Boardwalk, make sure you pick up some souvenirs at Boardwalk’s Best Gifts & Variety at Glenwood Avenue and the Boardwalk. This shop is your destination for all things Wildwood, providing swim and resort wear, shoes, accessories, gifts and more for everyone on your list, all at affordable prices.

When dinnertime rolls around, drink, dine and unwind at Urie’s Waterfront Restaurant off of Rio Grande Avenue. At Urie’s, you can enjoy dinner along the Wildwoods Yacht Basin and escape to the tropics. Urie’s waterfront deck is complete with its own Tiki Bar featuring favorite summer cocktails and beer. Indulge in all-you-can-eat snow and Maryland blue crabs nightly on the dockside deck, or opt for a fresh catch from the raw bar.

After dinner, keep the fun going and grab some great drink specials at Owen’s Pub in North Wildwood. At Owen’s, Happy Hour at the bar extends all the way until 8 p.m. for an even Happier Hour! If you stay past Happy Hour, you might be able to catch some live entertainment such as DJs or games like Name That Tune and Quizzo!
