CAPE MAY – Crystal Gayle, who has a number of chart-topping hits and prestigious awards to her credit, will showcase her extensive talent at a special concert hosted at Cape May Convention Hall, on Saturday, May 23 at 8pm.
Born Brenda Gail Webb, she became Crystal at the suggestion of her older sister, Loretta Lynn, and landed her first recording contract right out of high school in 1970. Gayle’s debut single, “I’ve Cried (The Blue Right out of My Eyes),” was written by Loretta and reached the Top 25 on Billboard’s country chart. From the moment this hit reached the charts, Gayle continued to dominate the country scene. After taking her sister’s advice to become a crossover star, she released her biggest hit of her career, “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue,” earning her a Grammy for Best Female Country Vocal Performance.
Crystal Gayle was also honored as the Female Vocalist of the Year by the Country Music Association Awards (1977 and ’78) and the Academy of Country Music (1976-77 and ’79). She also was honored by the American Music Awards as Favorite Female Country Artist in 1979, ’80 and ’86, and was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2009.
Concert goers will enjoy a performance of Gayle’s top hits along with pieces from her recent project, “All My Tomorrows”, a collection of American classics including, “Cry Me A River”, “Sentimental Journey”, “It Had to Be You”, and “Smile”.
“These are songs any artist loves to sing,” says Gayle. “They’ve endured to become timeless classics.”
