Greater Cape May Elks/Tom Beheler Basketball Tournament
Friday, December 27th to Sunday, December 29th
Where: Lower Township Recreation Center – 2600 Bayshore Rd, Villas

A Holiday Basketball Tournament for children grades 3 to 8 takes place at Lower Township Recreation Center and the Richard C. Teitelman School in Lower Township, New Jersey on Dec. 27, 28, and 29, 2013. Teams from surrounding counties take part in this becoming popular event for kids. This year we expect a great turnout of teams. The Tournament, which is in honor of Tom Beheler who succumbed to ALS/Lou Gehrig’s Disease, was initiated by his wife, Charlotte and his best friend, John Herman. Proceeds go to ALS, Hope of Cape May County and Lower Township Recreation Department’s Traveling Basketball Teams.
Greater Cape May Elks is proud to be a contributor as a part of their Youth and Community Projects. The 6th Annual Dashing Thru The Sand is a 5K Run/2 Mile Fun Walk that takes place on the beach in Avalon. Registration is in the Avalon Community Hall at 8 am with a 9 am SHARP Race Time Start. Dashing Thru The Sand is the main fundraiser that benefits the Live Like Lozier Memorial Fun – a non-profit organization created in memory of Craig K. Lozier. The organization works with the community and the local high schools to promote safe driving, to save lives and prevent senseless tragedy. For more info, please call (609) 602-9946.

Family Winter Bird Census
Saturday, December 28th from 10 am to noon
Where: Two Mile Beach Unit of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge – 12001 Pacific Ave, Wildwood Crest

The Friends of Cape May National Wildlife Refuge will present a special free family-friendly “Winter Bird Census” on Saturday, Dec. 28, from 10 am –noon, at the Two Mile Beach Unit of the Refuge.

Join our friendly volunteers and help us try to count as many different birds as we can in a two-hour period. We will begin with a walk on the beach to look for our elusive snowy owl as well as wintering sanderlings, dunlin and ruddy turnstones, as well as offshore sea ducks and gannets. On our walk through the dune forest, we may see some raptors, cedar waxwings, myrtle warblers and more. Then, at the bird blind by the salt ponds, we can enjoy (and try to count!) our hundreds of wintering “puddle ducks.” Finally, we will return to the visitor center and upload our findings to the E-bird database. For more info or directions, please call (609) 513-9349. Heavy rain or snow cancels the event.
