Tennis: A Sport for a Lifetime

Tennis Center 3

Whether you’re a tennis pro or first-time player, start your summer out on the courts at The Cape May Tennis Center! The beautiful facilities provide locals and vacationers with a great place to play tennis with their friends and family. Located on Washington Street (next to the Emlen Physick Estate), the center provides court rentals, lessons, adult and children’s clinics, a pro shop for apparel, and a variety of social events and tournaments year-round.

The tennis center was founded in 1962 by Thomas W. Harris, Jr. and has served the Cape May community and visitors for the past 57 years, bringing joy to players since its establishment. The staff at The Cape May Tennis Center have made it their mission to encourage fun, health, recreation, and good sportsmanship for all ages, which is evident today in their efforts to engage the community in the wonderful world of tennis.

If you drive down Washington Avenue in the heart of Cape May, you can’t miss The Cape May Tennis Center. The center is open to the public for all your tennis needs seven days a week, year-round. Play singles or doubles on one of 16 courts, with 14 clay composition and two hard courts. While some players may prefer hard courts, the clay courts are easier on your knees and quicker to dry, so in the event of rain, the courts will be ready for your match the following morning. The courts are arranged in pairs with surrounding hedges, so even on the windiest days, you’re protected from the wind and glare to ensure you play the best match possible.

Tennis is a great sport for kids, but it’s never too late for adults or seniors to learn as well! All ages and levels are welcome and encouraged to join in on the fun. Children ages 4 to 17 can sign up for the One Love USTA Quick Start Tennis sessions from Wednesday, June 26 to Friday, August 2. Sign up for the six-week session, a weekly session, or stop by for a daily drop-in. For more information and registration, visit onelovekidstennis.com. Plus, children under 21 play free every afternoon from 12-4 p.m. For beginners or players who want to improve their technique, schedule a private lesson or semi-private lesson with one of the experienced coaches on staff.

While there are many familiar faces and frequent players out on the courts, the center is also a great place for vacationers who are looking to play a few matches during their time in Cape May. Start your day by stopping by the office to schedule a court rental or sign up for a weekly membership. During the summer season, anyone can rent courts in 90-minute intervals, with start times of 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., or 10 a.m., with more flexibility in the afternoon.

The center hosts a variety of events throughout the season, starting with the White and Wood Mixed Doubles Round Robin and Social on Saturday, June 29 at 5 p.m. On Saturday, July 20 and Sunday, July 21, bring your family together for the highly anticipated Parent/Grandparent – Child Doubles Tournament and share the love of tennis with family members of all ages.

No matter the level – beginner, intermediate, advanced – you’re sure to have fun at The Cape May Tennis Center!
