Shop, Dine & Relax at the Washington Street Mall, a Cape May Tradition

Cape May stands as the nation’s oldest seashore resort. Also known as the Queen of the Seaside Resorts, Cape May distinguishes itself in many ways. It features pristine beaches and all the amenities that make any seashore town lovely, but also a distinct Victorian heritage. In fact, in 1976, the entire city of Cape May was declared a National Historic Landmark. The Washington Street Mall, a three-block shopping district located in the heart of Cape May, is yet another unique trait of the quaint seaside town.

Originally constructed as a pedestrian concourse in 1972, the Washington Street Mall received a facelift in June of 2008. Accented by rustic fountains and renovated with a new brick walkway, the refreshed Washington Street Mall features the same great independent and multi-generational shops that have become its signature over the years. As a small town, Cape May supports and takes pride in these friendly, family-owned businesses, and hopes that visitors to the Mall enjoy its service and charm. Just a brief walk from Beach Avenue, the Mall is easily accessible by foot, bike or car and features its own parking lots and bike racks.

As you stroll among the Washington Street Mall, you’ll find a diverse selection of unique, one-of-a-kind shops. Satisfy your sweet tooth at one of many ice cream shops or candy stores. Check out the works of both local and non-local artists showcased in one of the galleries. Upgrade your wardrobe with the help of the Mall’s several apparel, shoe and accessory boutiques.

The Washington Street Mall is also home to a host of T-shirt shops, each featuring unique Cape May prints and designs. Great White Shark features an extensive collection of humorous novelty tees, as well as gifts and souvenirs so you can take a piece of Cape May home with you. After finding just what you need at Great White Shark, head down the street to get your beach read at Cape Atlantic Book Company, a full service book store located on the second floor of the City Centre Mall.

At the Washington Street Mall, you’ll find a wide spectrum of cuisine and dining experiences, with 13 restaurants in its three-block span. Try Tisha’s Fine Dining, featuring a variety of dishes that perfectly marry the “home cooking” and fine dining styles. Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Tisha’s features two beautiful dining rooms with a fresh, modern look, and offers two unique patio-dining areas that are pet-friendly.

After a day of shopping and dining alfresco, enjoy free evening concerts with family and friends at the newly renovated Rotary Park just behind the Washington Street Mall. Concerts begin at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights.

Come join this Cape May tradition and shop, dine and relax at the Washington Street Mall!
