Over the past few months, our world has been greatly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Although the pandemic is still on everyone’s minds, local businesses in Cape May County have started to re-open as community members find their new normal as the pandemic continues. With safety as their top priority, the Cape May Tennis Center is ready to welcome players back to the courts for safe, social distancing matches.

For everyone ready to come out of lockdown, tennis is the perfect sport to play during the pandemic. Tennis is social, physical, and intellectual: exactly what everyone has been missing while staying at home for the past few months. The Cape May Tennis Center wants players to feel safe coming back to the courts and have put guidelines in place to ensure the health and safety of all players. The non-contact sport allows for social distancing and takes place on the Tennis Center’s outdoor courts so you can enjoy the fresh air while you play. No matter the level – beginner, intermediate, advanced – you’re sure to have fun playing non-contact tennis at the Cape May Tennis Center!

The Cape May Tennis Center was founded in 1962 by Thomas W. Harris, Jr. and has served the Cape May community and visitors for the past 57 years, bringing joy to players since its establishment. The staff at The Cape May Tennis Center have made it their mission to encourage fun, health, recreation, and good sportsmanship for all ages, which is evident today in their efforts to engage the community in the wonderful world of tennis despite the current pandemic.

If you drive down Washington Avenue in the heart of Cape May, you can’t miss the Cape May Tennis Center. The center is open to the public for players’ tennis needs seven days a week, year-round. Play singles or doubles on one of 16 courts, with 14 clay composition and two hard courts. While some players may prefer hard courts, the clay courts are easier on your knees and quicker to dry, so in the event of rain, the courts will be ready for your match the following morning. The courts are arranged in pairs with surrounding hedges, so even on the windiest days, you’re protected from the wind and glare to ensure you play the best match possible.

While there are many familiar faces and frequent players out on the courts, the center is also a great place for vacationers who are looking to play a few matches during their time in Cape May. Vacationers can start their day by scheduling a court rental or signing up for a weekly membership. During the summer season, anyone can rent courts in 90-minute intervals, with start times of 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., or 10 a.m.

Whether you’re a tennis pro or first-time player, start your summer out on the courts at the Cape May Tennis Center! As an added benefit, recreational tennis players live an average of 9.7 years longer than sedentary people (Mayo Clinic Proceedings, Sept. 2018). So play tennis, and live longer!
