CAPE MAY COURT HOUSE – Do you want to win a year’s supply of food for your pet? Come to the Children’s Pet Show, sponsored by Smeltzer & Sons Feed & Pet Supplies, on Saturday, July 22 at the Cape May County 4-H Fair for a chance to win a year’s supply of food for the grand champion pet.
No matter what makes your pet unique, the 4-H Fair’s Children’s Pet Show is the place for them to showcase their talents. All four-legged, furry, scaly and feathered pets and the people who love them are invited to perform on the main stage at the 4-H Fair. The event is open to the public and all children can participate, even if they are not a 4-H member.
Check-in starts at 9 a.m. and the show will begin at 10 a.m. Dog owners are asked to bring current rabies vaccination certificates for their animals and plenty of water for them to drink.
Children and their pets can enter any one of the five categories including: dogs, cats, rabbits and other small furry creatures, reptiles and amphibians or birds. Within those categories, there are 13 different classes that participants can enter. The cost to enter the pet show is $1 per class.
Linda Horner, 4-H Youth Development Program Coordinator, said, “Besides being a great time and a favorite activity for our visitors, the purpose of the pet show is to provide children a fun and informal way to get acquainted with 4-H.”
Ribbons will be awarded in all classes. Best in Show trophies will also be awarded in each division. The GRAND PRIZE, given out to the best all-around winner, is a one year’s supply of Pet Food from Smeltzer & Sons.
The pet show is all in fun, so while you won’t see any formal classes or divisions, you will see classes for cats with the longest whiskers, dogs with the most unusual coat pattern or the noisiest bird. Every category also has an owner look alike class and one for best costume.
Children are welcome to attend with their pets, but please be mindful of the summer weather and make sure both animals and young handlers are well hydrated and dressed comfortably. Children under five-years-old can have an adult help them during the pet show.
This year, the annual 4-H Fair runs July 20-22 at the 4-H fairgrounds located at 355 Court House – South Dennis Rd., Cape May Court House. Public hours for the fair are noon to 9 p.m. Thursday and Friday and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Admission is free and there is a host of fun events Thursday through Saturday.
