CAPE MAY — The New Christy Minstrels, a legendary folk ensemble that burst onto the American music scene in 1961, will perform Monday, August 8 at the Cape May Convention Hall as part of the city’s 2016 Summer Concert Series. Showtime is 8 p.m.
The large-ensemble folk music group still is under the direction of founder Randy Sparks. The group, which has featured more than 300 members over the years, has launched the careers of several musicians including Kenny Rogers, Gene Clark, Kim Carnes and Barry McGuire.
The group won a Grammy for its very first album (Best Performance by a Chorus) and went on to earn a number of gold records. The New Christy Minstrels have recorded more than 20 albums, with chart-topping hits including “Green, Green,” “Saturday Night,” “Today” and “This Land is Your Land.”
