Journey Through the Instruments of the Orchestra Spotlights Brass at Next Summer Lecture Series Installment

Sponsored by Bay Atlantic Symphony

Continue your journey through the instruments of the orchestra by learning about the brass at the next installment of the free summer music lectures by Paul M. Somers, sponsored by the Bay Atlantic Symphony.

This installment, taking place in four counties from June 27 to 30, will continue the survey of each instrument section of the orchestra—recognition through sight and sound, as well as how the instruments produce their sound—with recorded examples of the instruments. The lectures will follow score order—how the instruments are listed in the conductor’s score. The lectures will also include an “instrument petting zoo” with actual examples of instruments to be covered in each installment, courtesy of Hambro House of Music in Northfield.

This second installment of lectures will occur on Monday, June 27 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. at the Ocean County Library, Little Egg Harbor Branch, 290 Mathistown Rd., Little Egg Harbor Township, and from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Event Room of the Vineland Public Library, 1058 E. Landis Ave., Vineland; on Tuesday, June 28 from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Ocean City Public Library, Room 110, 1735 Simpson Ave., Ocean City; and on Thursday, June 30 from 1:30 to 3 p.m. at the Bloom Pavilion, 101 S. Huntington Ave. (across from the Margate Public Library parking lot), Margate.

Future summer lectures—at the same times—will include a surveys of strings Monday, July 11 (Vineland), Tuesday, July 12 (Ocean City), Thursday, July 14 (Margate—at the Margate Public Library, 8100 Atlantic Ave.) and Monday, July 18 (Little Egg Harbor); and percussion instruments, keyboards and harp—with the entire orchestra on show—Monday, July 25 (Little Egg Harbor and Vineland), Tuesday, July 26 (Ocean City) and Thursday, July 28 (Margate Public Library).

This series is in addition to the monthly music lectures series, sponsored by the Symphony and given by Somers, which runs from September through May at the Ocean County Library, Little Egg Harbor Branch; Ocean City Public Library; Vineland Public Library; and the Margate Public Library.
Somers, Adult Education Director for the Bay Atlantic Symphony and co-founder of Maurice River Music with his wife Janet, is also a composer and a performer, who was for 25 years the harpsichordist for the Virtuoso Strings of New York. For 10 years, he was a reviewer for the Star-Ledger.

The lectures are co-sponsored by the libraries in which they given.
