Carroll Gallery Exhibit: Center for Community Arts (CCA) presents “Moore History: The Story of William J. Moore of Cape May”: See the impact of the African-American community on Cape May at this annual Carroll Gallery exhibit on the grounds of the Emlen Physick Estate, 1048 Washington St. The CCA History Committee has selected important original documents, objects, and photographs of William J. Moore’s long and honored life. Mr. Moore was principal of the segregated West Cape May Elementary Annex school for almost 50 years, inspiring many of his students to go on to college and careers. He served as the executive of Cape May Golf Club and then the pro at Cape May Tennis Club, which was named in his honor at his 100th birthday. He raised nine children with his wife, Susie (Smothers) Moore, and founded the William J. Moore Scholarship Fund. Many of his students and friends remember him to this day. Their testimonies and recollections accompany Mr. Moore’s own words and those of his children. Exhibit admission is free. Open daily through Sunday, April 9. Hours vary. Friends of the World War II Lookout Tower – “More on World War I”: Join the Friends of the World War II Tower for a follow-up to the latest discussions of the underappreciated role of Cape May in World War I, in ongoing observance of the centennial of America’s entry into World War I on April 6, 1917. Historian Richard Gibbs will share his extensive collection of rare pictures of Cape May during The Great War. Light refreshments will be served. Hurricanes, Nor’easters, and blizzards have all left the city with a flood of memories and haunting images of utter devastation. Exhibit curator Ben Miller, author of Exit Zero’s bestselling book, “The First Resort,” provides visitors with an unforgettable look at iconic storms that have ravaged Cape May, and a greater appreciation for the awesome power wielded by Mother Nature. Grand Lighthouse Cruise: Come aboard the Cape May Whale Watcher to view and photograph seven historic lighthouses of the late 19th and early part of the 20th centuries. Most of these lighthouses stand on pedestals out of sight of land and are still operational. Each 5-hour cruise includes narration on the history of each lighthouse and more. New in 2017! Underground Railroad Trolley Tour: Climb aboard Cape May’s newest trolley tour to hear tales of the Underground Railroad in Cape May. Hear how, fleeing their chains in Maryland, Delaware and Virginia, African American slaves braved strong currents and stormy seas, guided by the beacon at the Cape May Lighthouse. Hear how legendary anti-slavery fighter, Harriet Tubman, walked these streets, as did businessman and former slave, Stephen Smith, whose railroad cars carried hundreds to freedom. Ghosts of the Lighthouse Trolley Tour: A trolley tour through parts of West Cape May to the Lighthouse, with tales of ghostly activity along the way.
