CAPE MAY – Inspired by Barbra Streisand’s book “My Passion for Design,” the Off-Broadway hit “Buyer and Cellar” by Jonathan Tolins is an outrageous comedy about the price of fame, the cost of things and the oddest of odd jobs. Alex More, a struggling actor in LA, takes a job working in Barbra Streisand’s Malibu basement, as a solo shopkeeper of sorts for her mall-like collection of memorabilia. One day, the Lady herself comes downstairs to play, and an unlikely friendship develops.
Roy Steinberg, producing artistic director of Cape May Stage, will direct the hit comedy. Steinberg stated, “I chose ‘Buyer and Cellar’ to follow the very intense ‘Disgraced’ because we all need a warm laugh as the winter chill descends upon us. ‘Buyer and Cellar’ is like offering a soufflé after a substantial meal.”
Playing Alex, an underemployed actor working for Babs herself, is Trey Gerrald. Trey takes this one-man play to new heights and puts the audience on a roller coaster of emotions. He navigates a world that is part truth and part fiction. Unlike Trey Gerrald’s character, Trey is a seasoned pro on stage, television and film. He has had recurring roles on Netflix’s “Orange is the New Black,” Hulu’s “Deadbeat” and the CW’s “The Carrie Diaries.” Gerrald has also starred opposite Danny DeVito in “Weiner Dog” and won a Thesis Award for Best Supporting Actor in the indie movie “Kate.”
Hailed by the “New York Times” as “Fantastically Funny,” “Buyer and Cellar” runs October 20 through November 18. On October 29, there is a half-price senior matinee, on November 11, a talkback with cast and crew, and on November 13, a pay-what-you-wish night. The show runs Thursday through Saturday at 7:30 p.m., with matinees on Saturday and Sunday at 3 p.m.
In addition to the opening of “Buyer and Cellar,” Cape May Stage invites you to the event of the season with Steven Brinberg as Barbra Streisand in “Simply Barbra.” Steven Brinberg is the premier Barbra Streisand impressionist, performing his show, “Simply Barbra,” to international acclaim both on stage and television as he pays homage to all that is Streisand. Steven does not lip-sync his performances, but accurately portrays Streisand with his own voice. With over a decade of performing experience, his show has Steven in demand literally worldwide.
This one-night event is on October 30 at 8 p.m., celebrating the music of the beloved Barbra Streisand. Steven’s impression of the iconic singer, actress, author and director is sheer perfection. He captivates the audience with his extraordinary talent and makes the Barbra Streisand we hear about in “Buyer and Cellar” authentic. Tickets for this event are $25 for general admission and $35 for VIP admission, which will include wine and a special meet-and-greet with Steven after the show.
