Cape May Stage Opens 2018 Season with ‘Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End’

CAPE MAY – Cape May Stage, a premier professional not-for-profit Equity theatre, is focused on yet another captivating, record-breaking season. The 2018 season opens May 23 with “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End” by Allison Engel and Margaret Engel. The one-woman comedy is filled with light-hearted humor and nuggets of wisdom that gives insight into the life and family of the beloved 1960s columnist.

Directing “Erma Bombeck: At Wit’s End” is director, playwright, actor and Cape May Stage veteran Marlena Lustik. Lusitk says, “Erma Bombeck is as relevant and funny now as she ever was. Her side-splitting humor relates to family life today as vividly as it did when she first cast her comedienne’s eye on the plight of the stay at home mom. As she said, ‘If you don’t take yourself seriously, it’s as sure as heck you’re not going to take anything else seriously.’”

Kate Hathaway stars as the literary icon whose candid commentary on life as a woman, spouse and mother made her the champion of suburban housewives everywhere. Full of personal anecdotes and sprinkled with plenty of Bombeck’s famous one-liners, it’s a charming biography that proves “if you can’t make it better, you can laugh at it.”

Kate returns to Cape May Stage having previously been seen in “I Hate Hamlet,” “Steel Magnolias” and “Other Desert Cities.” Her other credits include on tour and regionally in the role of Fantine in “Les Miserables,” Eva Peron in “Evita” and Nellie Forbush in “South Pacific,” among many others. Kate is also a theatrical producer on hit shows such as “Ann,” presented at Lincoln Center about former Texas Governor Ann Richards, and an investing producer on “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical.” Kate is also a member of the board of directors of Cape May Stage.

Erma Bombeck’s wit stood the test of time and reminds us that the foibles of family life will always make us laugh. Previews on May 23, opens on May 24 with an after party at The Mad Batter with cast and crew, and runs through June 22.
