Harry’s Ocean Bar & Grille is known for its unbeatable oceanfront dining, panoramic patio bar and extensive collection of beer, wine and cocktails. It’s also home to some of Cape May’s friendliest mixologists, which is why we chose April Mauger from Harry’s to be our featured bartender of the week.
A North Cape May native, April began working at Harry’s last summer after casually strolling by one day. She thought Harry’s cool, casual, beachfront atmosphere looked like a great place to work, so she decided to apply. Although April attended Bartending School a few years ago, she did not start out as a bartender. She remained a server for quite a while and was eventually asked to move up to a bartending position. “She has always been one of our best servers, and we wanted to reach in-house for new bartenders,” explained Jonathan Hirsch, Food and Beverage Director.
A year-round resident of Cape May County, April works at Harry’s during the summer and keeps busy the rest of the year by teaching yoga, acting and modeling. She performs locally on the stage of Elaine’s in Cape May, and often travels to Philadelphia and New York City for modeling jobs. When she isn’t serving up drinks at Harry’s and finds some free time from her other gigs, she enjoys yoga, the beach and spending time with her nieces and nephews.
April shares that her favorite part about working at Harry’s is the atmosphere, being able to enjoy beautiful views and the sights and sounds of Cape May all while on the job. She also commented on Harry’s owners, saying, “The Hirschs are awesome, and their spirit really shines through at Harry’s.”
Come visit April and try her recommended drink, the Orange Crush, made with fresh-squeezed (right before your eyes) orange juice, Sobieski Orange Vodka, Triple Sec and a splash of club soda. Stop in during Happy Hour daily from 4 to 6 p.m. and get $2 off beer and wine, and $5 select apps. Bring your cocktail upstairs and sip it over live music from 4 to 8 p.m. Keep calm and Harry on!
