This Memorial Day weekend, we commemorate all those men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice to serve and protect our freedom as U.S. citizens. We also look forward to a summer jam-packed with tons of shore fun. Check out this holiday’s event highlights.

Wildwoods International Kite Festival
Friday-Monday, May 23rd to 26th
Where: Wildwoods Convention Center – 3720 Boardwalk, Wildwood

The largest kite festival in North America taking place on the Beach at Rio Grande Avenue in Wildwood and inside the Wildwoods Convention Center featuring kite makers from around the world flying their most incredible colorful creations. Event begins on Friday at noon with the ‘Unlocking of the Ocean’ media event on the beach behind the Wildwoods Convention Center. Festivities continue with the opening of the Festival Field Tent and the 9 p.m. illuminated kite fly at Rio Grande Ave. and the beach. Saturday and Sunday include the East Coast Stunt Kite Championships on the beach starting at 9 a.m. daily, as well as kite exhibits and workshops. A Kite Festival Auction will be held in the Wildwoods Convention Center at 7 p.m. on Saturday night and is open to the public – many unique kites and collectibles will be auctioned off.

Monday will feature the World Indoor Kite Competition from 11 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. inside the Wildwoods Convention Center where kite fliers will showcase their impressive ability to fly a kite without wind. AMERICA starring Linda Gentille & The Jersey Shore Pops

15th Annual Turtle Trot, 5K Run & 2 Mile Fun Walk
Sunday, May 25th at 8 a.m.
Where: 95th St & First Ave, Stone Harbor

The 15th Annual Stone Harbor Turtle Trot, 5K Run and 2 Mile Fun Walk will begin at 95th Street & First Avenue at the Beach Parking Lot. Registration begins at 6:45 a.m. and the race time is 8 a.m. You can register on line at Active.com. For info, call SH Chamber of Commerce, 609-368-6101.

Cape May Music Festival

Avalon Memorial Day Parade
Monday, May 26th from 9 to 11 a.m.
Where: Starting at 32nd and Dune Dr, Avalon

The parade proceeds to Veterans Plaza.

North Wildwood Memorial Day Services
Monday, May 26th at 10 a.m.
Where: North Wildwood Veterans Monument – Spruce & New York Aves, Wildwood

North Wildwood Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5941 and the City of North Wildwood will be honoring our fallen soldiers from every war on Memorial Day, May 26, 2014 beginning at 10:00 a.m. at the North Wildwood Veterans Monument, Spruce and New York Avenues in North Wildwood to honor all veterans who have passed.

There will also be a service May 26, 2014 beginning 9:30 a.m. at the Hereford Inlet Lighthouse flagpole where the names of passed VFW Post 5941 since last Memorial Day will be read and their service honored.

All are welcomed to join us in remembering those who have fought for the many liberties we share as a nation today and every day.

Stone Harbor Memorial Day Parade

Middle Township Memorial Day Parade
Monday, May 26 at 10 a.m.
Where: Beginning at Memorial Field

The Middle Township Department of Recreation will be holding a Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony May 26. The parade is scheduled to step off at 10:00 a.m. with the ceremony following the parade at approximately 10:45 a.m. Prior to the parade, the Township will hold a special tribute for Township residents who have relatives currently serving overseas.
Before the parade, the Middle Township Department of Recreation is inviting all families who have relatives currently serving overseas in the United States Military to meet at the American Legion Hall at Dias Creek Road and Hand Avenue at 9:00 a.m. Family members will be invited to walk or ride in the parade to be recognized for their commitment and sacrifice. All participants are encouraged to bring a portrait of their relatives with them for a group photograph.

Parade lineup begins at Memorial Field at 9:00 a.m., and will step off one hour later. The parade route will be Pacific Avenue right to Boyd Street. The parade route will bear left on Dias Creek Road and end at the American Legion Hall. There will be hot dogs and refreshments available to the public at no charge, and a visit from Uncle Sam. Cape May County Memorial Day Service
Monday, May 26 at 2 p.m.
Where: Cape May County Veterans’ Cemetery – 129 Crest Haven Road, Cape May Court House

Speakers will include Director Thornton, Freeholder Will Morey, Commanding Officer Todd Prestidge, United States Coast Guard TRACEN Cape May and Zac Lambert, Boy Scout Troop 73. Additionally, United States Congressman Frank LoBiondo has been invited to speak at the ceremony. The United States Coast Guard will provide the ceremonial detail and representatives from Cape May County Veterans’ organizations will also participate in the program that honors our fallen veterans.

Amish Market’s 1st Annual Memorial Day Hot Wing Contest

The Amish Market’s 1st Annual Hot Wing Contest will feature contestants from the Philadelphia Wing Bowl! Though this is the Market’s second summer in business, this will be their FIRST contest of any sort. The first prize winner will be awarded a prize of over $500 value. Can you take the heat?
