Now in its third year, the annual Monarch Festival has already become an important and much anticipated annual event hosted by the Nature Center of Cape May, here on Cape May’s other side. Teacher-Naturalist Brendan Schaffer, or “Mr. B” as the children call him, has been a driving force in creating and organizing the festival and ensuring that attendees will have a full, fun day. This year’s Monarch Festival has been scheduled for Sunday, October 13 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Attendees are encouraged to wear their best Monarch costume complete with wings. The fun really gets started with an official Monarch parade that steps off at 2:30 p.m., and those “best-dressed” Monarchs compete for the title of “Best Dressed” Monarch.
Naturally, there will be family crafts, educational programs, monarch tagging demonstrations, food and live music throughout the day. The event is free, although a $5 donation will help us defray some of the expenses.
